The MPYO is the centerpiece of the Michigan Philharmonic’s extensive music education program and stands apart from many other youth orchestra programs by providing the following:
- Side-by-side performances with the Michigan Philharmonic
- Sectionals and masterclasses with professional musicians
- Numerous opportunities to perform throughout the community
- Workshops with Michigan Philharmonic composers and guest artists (past workshops have included specialists in jazz improvisation, violin performance, piano performance, Chinese Erhu, Indian Sitar, and Latin Percussion)
- Unique, often custom repertoire arranged for MPYO that incudes the classics, pops, and numerous multicultural selections
